The use of transitions allows the video to become effective and ideal. A transition also makes the music video move smoothly as it allows the music video to be shown in its highest quality. This is important as it lets the audience see the activities that is shown throughout the video and become immersed. Editing is always important in any media production and the use of jump cuts and wipe in this music video allows the film making to be creative. The reason why it became successful was because of the cinematography shown in this video. Synergy is a significant factor of how a music video is presented and the lyrics and the video evidenced that theory. The quality of the video and how the camera moves with the subject of the music video also shows how professional the music video looked.

Extension Tasks - Cinematography

Part 1

The movie Gaslight uses many shots to identify with the audience. The clip includes a lack of camera movements; this is important as it creates an atmosphere in that we can understand what they are saying. This creates a posh mood as the audience feel a certain diversion from reality; to understand what is going on. The different use of shots also reveals the beautiful setting in the back which further interests the audience. The director has used many shots sho to create a sense of identification for the characters. The movie does not have any sense of domestic pleasure as the way they are dressed indicates that they are upper class. However in Ghost, we see two characters that are obsessed with each other. The different use of shots shows the domestic setting in the back which further interests the audience. There is a sense of identification with the audience.

Question 2

This film still is a medium close up shot as it focuses on the determined look of the character. It has an effect as we can we see what the character is doing when he is staring outside and yet see the close look on his facial expressions.

These are examples of high angle shots. The image may also be considered a long shot. High angle shots are often employed to show detail, such as character lack of authority which we can see here very clearly. It emphasises her look of discontent. A film-maker may use a high angle shot in order to get across the fact that the subject does not have authority in this scene; the audience go through the process of identification with that character.

These are examples of medium shots. The picture is an medium shot as it focuses onto the face expressions of the character. Medium shots are effective as there are more magnified in terms of meaning than a long shot. Often they are used to add tension and intrigue. However, here it highlights the significance of the person and their face expression.

These are examples of close ups- they establish the face expressions of the character   There is a lot of detail visible in this shot, it's meant to give a specific information rather than  general impression. It also establishes the scene as well in particular over the shoulder of the character.

Cinematography Tasks

Citizen Kane (1940) - Orson Welles

As you can see from the first scene, there were different point of views that enabled the audience to establish the overview of the setting. The long shots and medium shots were used to show the actors' facial expressions and body language. The establishing shot was effective as it presented everything; this can be used to help the understanding of the scene.

The cinematography in this films works well with the sound and editing as it has synergy. The reason why there was little sound was due to the enhanced tension which signifies many enigma codes. When there is less use of sound, it mostly contains parallel sounds.

Moulin Rouge (2001) - Baz Luhrmann

From what we see in the opening scene of the Moulin Rouge, there were many transitions and quick cuts. This is important as it helps create an element of suspense and keeps the clip at a fast pace.

In order to make the audience identify with the scene,  the parallel sound of the scene should have synergy with the scene. This is done well in this movie as it provides a sense of realism with the audience. This use of cinematography is made to make the audience go on a journey.

A Touch of Evil (1958) - Orson Welles

This clip has a very slow paced to build up suspense throughout. Also, the cinematography in this clip is used to enhance the tension through the clever use of slow transitions and certain shot types. In this clip, we see the use of over-the-shoulder shots. This creates tension as it creates realism in the environment and allows for the audience to be immersed in the content.

The soundtrack is contrapuntal as the 1950's American music completely contrasts the overall situation. There are however some levels of parallel as it suits the romantic elements seen throughout the scene. The  music also help create suspense.

Sound Task 3 work

There are interesting use of diagetic and non-diagetic sound inside this video. The diagetic sound has a captivating effect that is attention grabbing. The glass smashing and the motorbike revving has a realistic effect that allows the audience to be immersed with the action. The non-diagetic sound is just as captivating as the diagetic sound as it contains a cinematic effects. It draws the attention of the audience. There were elements of parallel sounds as the non-diagetic sound suits the overall atmosphere of the movie. There weren't as many contrapuntal sounds as there was parallel. The sound bridges in this scene are very clear as it may even seem like it's not there, an example of this is when the protagonist running after the criminal then the camera cuts onto another subject you could notice the sound bridge.

My Comparision

My comparison with other videos is interesting as all video have similar characteristics that make it unique. I, however have a top three that really stood out for me. These are my top three videos.....

1) Abdullah's Video
Abdullah used a creative example for the contrapuntal sound as the music completely contrasted with the overall purpose of the video clip. Also, the contrapuntal music was effective as there was no relation with the video. However he could have used his own own music to represent the parallel taking it off the actual video.

2) Nasteha's Video
This video has a personal touch that appealed with the audience. It had an effect that captivated our attention as there were many enigma codes; The audience wants to know what is going to happen. However the quality of video was poor with the video being vertical. Some improvements would have been made. However, overall the video was entertaining.

3) Jasmit's Video
Jasmit used contrasting instrumentals that suited the whole video. There were many different scenarios inside the video and the use of different instrumentals suited the whole video. However, an improvement of this video would have showing an indicator of what is Contrapuntal and Parallel.

My Video

WWW: My video contained different videos and instrumentals but had a connection as there was synergy. The slow-motion fighting scene suited the classical music.

EBI: I should have used a larger selection of videos.
