AS Preliminary Task

Evaluation
The short extract of a possible film is used to show a arthouse feel towards the film. This is apparent due to the rigid scenes made possible by the handheld camera. This scene starts with the camera focusing on the main character who is taking photos. The use of a long shot and an establishing shot allows the scene to be identified and suits the audience's needs. There is a visible straight cut which changes angles to introduce a new character. This is used to identify the new character who is being introduced. The extract continues to be played out in a raw viewing which suits the overall film look. There were many predicaments while shooting this film (mainly to do with sound). We used the extension cord to process the sound and makes it become clearer. Also, while in post-production, the actors and setting starts to change especially when I tried to add match on action. Overall, the film had no major problems with the scenes looking neat.

Learner Response Task: Film Language Test

WWW: Some engaging writing: using media terminology well
EBI: You didn't mention music in Q3 and more time/focus needed on the last question - Editing

Re-write of the Editing question
Editing is vital in being used as a peripheral tool in generating excitement and tension largely because the person creating the film is in control. The crafty use of slow-paced editing has been deliberately deployed to immerse the audience with the scene; the scene recognising the benefits in terms of audience pleasures. The slow style allows the audience to understand the actions occurred in the scene. When the gun shot is used, there is a scene of the editing becoming faster when the shady character is trying to escape. This leads to audience to have question therefore enhancing enigma codes. There is also plenty uses of binary opposition shown especially with the characters. The person with the cigarette can be represented as fire and the person dressed in black shown as water. This clever use of editing shows the character smoking has his life ambitions extinguished by the water. This shows how editing can give the characters identities.  The editing also takes the transitions into thought as well. There are several jump cuts being used in this extract to disconcert and engage the audience. This produces a sense of crisis shown in the scene as we are forced to focus on the violent shots such as arson. The editing in this scene achieves the theatrical impression and builds tension successfully. Another use of editing that was shown in the extract is the constant switching between both characters. The failure to show the person’s face indicates that something immoral is about to happen. The cropped out image creates drama and tension as the audience begins to ask questions. The constant use of change in editing, in terms of the camera framing, indicates that something illegal is about to occur.

Editing Task

The transition shown in this clip is evident as there is a change in personnel. Both the main characters swap bodies inside this video and it becomes apparent with the blur when the impact happens. These transitions are useful as it allows people to understand the overall meaning and the concept of the video. Continuity editing is another aspect in editing that is apparent in this short film. The constant use of editing allows the audience to be immersed with the action. The way that the editing allowed the transition into other bodies to be efficient. As the characters face off against each other, there is a lot of straight cuts to continue the narrative smoothly, this follows on with the action and enigma codes of Barthes’s theory. The lighting throughout the whole video was interesting as the lighting reflect the atmosphere of a certain scene. It also represents the social class and the way of their living.  What enhances the pace of the editing is the when the character who represents England had to work back to where he belong. This shows the dedication shown and the appreciation of the audience is apparent when the pace of the editing becomes fast. This whole video tends to consist to have medium to long shot to get the needed visceral pleasure of the action occurring. As more clip pass by, the atmosphere is getting more intense which results in faster paced editing to fit the style and mood, which basically are straight cuts consciously.

The whole clip starts off with a slow pace of a normal football match; this is used to gain a sense of identification with the audience. There is a long shot used to capture the incident with the ball-boy and the clever use of blur with a zoom changing the shot to a medium shot. Then there was a scene in their beds when the switch becomes apparent. The clever use of close ups for both characters show the initial reaction of the characters changing bodies. This is the point where Todorov's theory of equilibrium is set, this is the disequilibrium. We see a steady cam shot tracking the person going to a local football match with his mother's car while the other person arrives at an international training session. This adds a sense of bewilderment as people can change into other people’s bodies.

During this part of the sequence, quick, fast paced music begins to build up. This is another action code as the audience are likely to believe something inspirational is going to happen. The audience sees the characters adjusting to their current situations and allowing the current predicaments not to inder their ambitions. This may have been intentionally used to inspire the audience on the characters progression in life as he is not ready to quit because of a setback which adds to the inspirational but persuasive nature of the companies actions.
