Extension Tasks - Cinematography

Part 1

The movie Gaslight uses many shots to identify with the audience. The clip includes a lack of camera movements; this is important as it creates an atmosphere in that we can understand what they are saying. This creates a posh mood as the audience feel a certain diversion from reality; to understand what is going on. The different use of shots also reveals the beautiful setting in the back which further interests the audience. The director has used many shots sho to create a sense of identification for the characters. The movie does not have any sense of domestic pleasure as the way they are dressed indicates that they are upper class. However in Ghost, we see two characters that are obsessed with each other. The different use of shots shows the domestic setting in the back which further interests the audience. There is a sense of identification with the audience.

Question 2

This film still is a medium close up shot as it focuses on the determined look of the character. It has an effect as we can we see what the character is doing when he is staring outside and yet see the close look on his facial expressions.

These are examples of high angle shots. The image may also be considered a long shot. High angle shots are often employed to show detail, such as character lack of authority which we can see here very clearly. It emphasises her look of discontent. A film-maker may use a high angle shot in order to get across the fact that the subject does not have authority in this scene; the audience go through the process of identification with that character.

These are examples of medium shots. The picture is an medium shot as it focuses onto the face expressions of the character. Medium shots are effective as there are more magnified in terms of meaning than a long shot. Often they are used to add tension and intrigue. However, here it highlights the significance of the person and their face expression.

These are examples of close ups- they establish the face expressions of the character   There is a lot of detail visible in this shot, it's meant to give a specific information rather than  general impression. It also establishes the scene as well in particular over the shoulder of the character.
